Your regular dental checkup at Cenla Dentistry is designed to clean your teeth and allow our team to monitor your mouth for problems with gum disease and tooth decay. Should you procrastinate your dental checkup, the bacteria in your mouth can exploit tooth enamel. If an undetected cavity grows too large, the tooth might need to be repaired by a dental crown.
The process starts with your dentist, Dr. Honey Fiasconaro, examining the tooth to assess the severity of the decay. If the decay has penetrated the pulp or root of the tooth, a root canal might need to be performed. This involves excising the decayed material before restoring the integrity of the tooth with alternate materials.
If the interior of the tooth is still healthy, your dentist will merely use a drill to remove the entire tooth enamel layer. This leaves behind a post-like abutment that encases the pulp and root of the tooth.
Your dentist will then take an impression of the area, which will be sent to our off-site dental lab where your final crown will be made. A temporary crown will then be secured over the abutment to protect it.
We will call you to schedule a second appointment when your new crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed and a strong dental adhesive will be used to cement your crown into place.
